As he revs up his reelection campaign, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker discussed a wide range of topics — AI, data centers, the Bears stadium search, President Donald Trump’s mental fitness and more — in the season debut of NBC Chicago’s podcast “The Takeaway with Alex.”
The interview comes as Pritzker grows his national profile, with speculation ramping up ahead of a possible 2028 run for president.
The governor, who said he uses AI “in some fashion every day,” said the U.S. government should not have a direct stake in AI companies like OpenAI or Anthropic.
“To me that sounds like Venezuela,” said Pritzker, referring to a country where many large enterprises are state-controlled.
OpenAI has proposed giving the government a 5% stake in the company, valued at tens of billions of dollars, as one potential way to share benefits of the transformative technology with the American public.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Democrat from Vermont, has separately proposed a one-time tax to form a “sovereign wealth fund” that could share the future prosperity of AI riches.
“I don’t think that the government should be getting into the business of private business and profits,” said Pritzker.
The governor also discussed why he is pausing state tax credits for data centers, seven years after the creation of a program that he championed with bipartisan legislative support. Illinois has over 200 data centers, but residents in some cities and towns are pushing back over issues like noise, water use and electricity demand.
“I think we need to maintain the [incentive] timeout until we have a set of guardrails put in place for data centers,” said Pritzker.
