Antonelli ‘hit the bottom’ at Spa in 2025, can’t believe turnaround

Twelve months can feel like a lifetime in Formula 1 – and few know that better than Kimi Antonelli, who returned to Spa-Francorchamps this weekend with memories of one of the darkest moments of his fledgling F1 career.

Last year's Belgian Grand Prix left him bruised both on the timesheets and mentally after a disappointing qualifying exit in Q1 and a distant 16th-place finish in the race, triggering criticism and raising uncomfortable questions about whether he was ready for the sport's biggest stage.

Fast forward a year, and the picture could hardly have been more different.

At Spa, Antonelli converted pole position into his sixth victory of the season to stretch his championship lead to 45 points over nearest challenger Lewis Hamilton.

It marked another milestone in a remarkable campaign and an emotional full-circle moment at the circuit where everything had once seemed to unravel.

From lowest point to championship leader

Reflecting on just how dramatically his fortunes have changed, Antonelli admitted that even he could never have imagined such a transformation.

"No, absolutely not,” he said. "Last year here, I probably reached the bottom. It was a very difficult weekend for me mentally.

“But this year was definitely a lot better. If you had asked me last year, at this moment, I probably would have said no."

Those words underline the scale of his resurgence. After an encouraging start to his rookie season with Mercedes, including points in five of the opening six races, Antonelli endured a difficult run through the European rounds.

While he celebrated a memorable first podium in Canada, consistency proved elusive, with Spa marking the lowest ebb of that challenging spell.

Now, the teenager has emerged as the benchmark in the championship, combining speed, maturity and resilience in equal measure.

A victory earned the hard way

Despite starting from pole, Antonelli's latest triumph was anything but comfortable.

A Virtual Safety Car period handed Ferrari an opportunity to leapfrog Mercedes, with Charles Leclerc emerging in front after the pit stops.

Rather than panic, Antonelli patiently hunted the Ferrari down before making the race-winning move ten laps from the checkered flag. Even then, Leclerc remained close enough to keep the pressure on until the chequered flag.

Antonelli acknowledged the victory required determination from start to finish.

"It was a hard-fought race," said Antonelli. "The pace was a lot higher than in practice, and it was not easy because Max, in the first stint, was keeping up, and then, obviously, Charles had great pace as well on the hards.

"So, it was not easy because there was also so much deployment difference between all the teams. As well, we were strong in certain parts of the track, but then weak in others.

"So, it definitely was not straightforward, but I’m very happy with it. We have to just keep performing, bringing the results and see what happens at the end of the year."

For Antonelli, the victory represented more than another trophy or another healthy haul of championship points. It was a powerful reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in Formula 1.

The circuit that once delivered heartbreak has now become the backdrop to one of the most inspiring chapters of his remarkable rise, proving just how far the young Mercedes star has come in the space of a single year.
