THUMP. That was a nice ending to a solid series win over the Twins at Wrigley Field this weekend.

Alex Bregman and Nico Hoerner — two poster boys of the Cubs’ first-half shortcomings — are today’s Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Co-Players of the Game.

Before the game got out of hand, Bregman got the offense started with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, pulling a Zebby Matthews’ breaking ball 101.4mph and 383 feet to left field.

Two innings later, Hoerner laced a line drive at Twins center fielder Luke Keaschall, who misplayed the liner’s first hop, and all of Michael Busch, Bregman, and Ian Happ came around to score.

Pedro Ramirez added an RBI single to cash in Nico one batter later, and just like that, the Cubs led 7-0 in the bottom of the 3rd with Shota Imanaga cruising on the mound.

It ended up being a seventh straight good start for Shota, who tossed seven shutout innings, allowed six hits, one walk, and struck out four. (Just two of those seven have been quality starts, though, so it’d be nice to see more length out of him as the second half unfolds.)

Meanwhile, Nico is now 8-for-12 since the All-Star break, and Bregman has started to slug a bit while continuing to reach base at a solid clip. Are these two all the way back? No. Am I thinking they’re a step or two down the road to being back? Yes.

The Cubs increased their lead to double digits in the 4th, adding three more runs, including a second RBI hit from Nico.

There was also this outstanding catch from PCA in the top of the 6th with runners on 1st and 3rd that paved the way for Shota to stay in the game and pitch the 7th.
