Duke head coach Manny Diaz had to know the questions would be coming fast and furious about quarterback Darian Mensah during his session with reporters on Friday at ACC Kickoff in Charlotte.
They did.
Specifically, there was a question about Mensah’s offseason transfer from Duke to Miami and if Diaz thought the Hurricanes tampered with Mensah before he ultimate decided to head south. Diaz, who was once on the other sideline as the head coach of the Hurricanes from 2019-21, who’s a Miami native, chose his words carefully in responding to the tampering question.
“It’s an unanswerable question because ultimately what it came down to, and this is why it was never an issue for us, is you can only say what you can prove,” Diaz said. “So, to me, it doesn’t matter. And that’s why our issue was never with any other school. The school was very consistent.”
Diaz then went a little deeper on the touchy issue.
“The whole situation was simply about a contract that we felt like had to be honored and it wasn’t honored,” he said. “Then what is the ramification of that? And that’s exactly what happened. All parties were satisfied and all parties moved on.”
One party, Mensah himself, will surely be a Heisman Trophy candidate this fall as he tries to lead Miami back to the College Football Playoff. The other party, Diaz and Duke, were fortunate enough to land a replacement for Mensah in San Jose State transfer Walker Eget, who threw for a combined 5,555 yards over the past 2 seasons out west.
Eget will be trying to lead Duke back to the ACC Championship Game, where the Blue Devils won the conference crown last season — with Mensah, who now becomes a conference rival for the Hurricanes. Duke and Miami will clash on Nov. 14 in South Florida, so Mensah will get a crack at facing the program he used to lead.
Mensah will no doubt help Miami as it pursues a return trip to the Playoff in 2026. The Hurricanes will be trying to do 1 win better than last season, when they lost in the national title game, and here is what the Kalshi market is currently saying about Miami’s chances to win its first national championship since 2001:
