When Will Ferrell first stepped into costume as Buddy in the now-iconic Christmas film Elf, he would have never guessed it would become such a hit. The 59-year-old actor reflected on his initial fears during a Good Morning America interview on Thursday, July 16.
"After, like, the first week of filming, I'm sitting in my little trailer going, 'This better work or it's over,'" he recalled, noting he was wearing his character's staple yellow tights while the doubts ran through his head. "It was a huge swing. A really big leap and, you know, I knew there was no playing Buddy the Elf without full commitment."
Ferrell continued: "He had to be full of wonder. He was someone who found wonder in the benign world that we all take for granted and so I had to throw myself into it and yeah, I wore that costume."
While the actor was putting everything he had into the role, he had a few moments of uncertainty. "I was thinking, 'This could be it,'" he shared.
When asked if he'd come back for a second Elf film, Ferrell said there's "no chance," joking that "the tights do not fit" and "are retired."
Elf — which also stars James Caan, Bob Newhart, Edward Asner, Mary Steenburgen and Zooey Deschanel — tells the story of Buddy, a human who was raised at the North Pole by Santa's elves, who travels to New York City to meet his real dad.
This wasn't the first time Ferrell opened up about his initial doubts about the film. During a chat with Amy Poehler on her “Good Hang” podcast earlier this week, he shared that he worried about what fans of his would think.
"I remember going, ‘This is either going to be a home run, or it’s going to be a complete strikeout,’” he said.
