Melissa Gilbert is both “honored” and “horrified” by a Halloween costume modeled after her Little House on the Prairie character Laura Ingalls. The 62-year-old star took to Instagram on Oct. 9 to share a photo of the look, which included a smiling mask, along with an inset photo of her on the 1970s hit television show, and didn’t hold back on revealing her opinion in the caption.
“Of all the awards and accolades I have received: an Emmy, Theater World Award, Star on the Walk of Fame, nothing has flattered me more than this spot-on, beautifully conceived and wildly convincing costume from Famous Faces,” she joked. “When I saw this, actually, while trick or treating as a child, my first thought was, ‘Wow, could Lou Ferrigno be my birth father?’”
Ferrigno played the famous Incredible Hulk in the 1970s series, and Gilbert’s comment comparing him to the mask encouraged many of her Instagram followers to come up with their own comparisons.
“It looks more like Michael [Landon] in a Prairie costume. LOL,” one follower wrote, referring to Gilbert’s TV dad. “Wayne Newton or Donny Osmond,” another follower added. A third even compared the face to Justin Bieber.
“If anyone from the Famous Faces company is around and sees this, I just want to say thank you. I am truly honored yet strangely horrified at the same time,” the actress ended the caption to her post.
Gilbert became a household name after her portrayal of Laura on Little House on the Prairie from 1974 to 1983. The show was loosely based on the book series of the same name by writer Laura Ingalls Wilder and centered on the Ingalls family, who lived on a farm on Plum Creek near Walnut Grove, Minnesota, from the 1870s to the 1890s. In addition to Gilbert and Landon, it starred Karen Grassle, Melissa Sue Anderson, and twins Lindsay and Sydney Greenbush.
Another television version of Little House on the Prairie debuted on Netflix on July 9 and was renewed for a second season ahead of the premiere.
