SPENCPORT, N.Y. — A former Spencport girls lacrosse star is going viral after making an incredible shot in a Women’s Lacrosse League game.
Erin Coykendall was one of the best high school recruits in the entire country in 2019. She went on to play at Northwestern and even won a national championship, but there was no way she could have predicted getting a chance to play pro.
“Not something that when I was even going through high school and college, I thought I would have. So, it’s pretty surreal,” Coykendall said.
The reason it’s so unbelievable? Well, the WLL didn’t exist even two years ago.
“It was surreal, like getting the call to be able to play lacrosse again, was unbelievable,” she said.
And last weekend, Coykendall made a highlight-reel shot that caught national attention. She described the moment as instinctive.
“Kind of felt my foot get stuck in the ground and started to fall backwards and wanted to get something on cage. So, I guess that’s what came to mind. I kind of blacked out. I kind of just stood up and was like, oh, it went in? Cool. And then kept playing,” Coykendall said.
The shot racked up more than 16 million views on Instagram alone and landed the number one spot on ESPN’s SportsCenter’s Top 10. Her fans came out of the woodoworks.
“I mean, I got a text from my kindergarten gym teacher the other day being like, that was a sick shot. Like, so glad you can still be on, like, playing lacrosse,” she said.
Coykendall’s season with the Charging is over, but she left a mark on the game. She hopes young players in Spencport can see that playing professionally is possible.
“The WLL does a great job of engaging us with the young girls who are coming and the young boys who are coming to our games. And, you know, it just kind of puts it into perspective,” Coykendall said.
