2001 Oscar-Nominated Film Was Just Crowned the Greatest Fantasy and Adventure Movie of All Time

The enchanting atmosphere of a magical place combined with daring, daunting moments makes for a memorable movie experience. This is exactly why fantasy adventure films tend to have dedicated fandoms. The publication Colliderrecently spotlighted some of the most popular films within the genre with a ranking of "the 10 greatest fantasy and adventure movies of all time."

The list, published on July 14, included fantasy movies like 2010's How to Train Your Dragon, The Princess Bride from 1987, and Princess Mononoke from 1997. Collider gave the number one ranking to Peter Jackson's 2001 film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The publication complimented the Oscar-nominated movie, adapted from J. R. R. Tolkien's 1954 novel, for being timeless and universally admired.

Peter Jackson Shared How He Ended up Directing the 'Lord of the Rings' Films

In a 2001 interview, Jackson explained how he ended up making the Lord of the Rings films, including The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) and the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). He said he had wanted to return to his home country of New Zealand to make another film, specifically a fantasy movie. He also said that while he and his writing partners were trying to come up with an original idea, they kept saying how they wanted to make "a Lord of the Rings-type of movie." The Heavenly Creature director said that they eventually decided to "see whether the rights to the Lord of the Rings itself was available."

Once he found out that he could make a Lord of the Rings movie, he went to different movie studios to try to get the film off the ground. After numerous rejections, New Line Cinema took on the project and agreed to let Jackson shoot the trilogy concurrently.

During the interview, Jackson also shared whether he believed Tolkien, who died in 1973 at the age of 81, would have approved of his version of The Lord of the Rings films, specifically The Fellowship of the Rings. He said he believed the author would have taken some issue with how the film differentiated from his original text.

"I would hope he'd like the film I guess is the only answer I can give you. I think, having spent his lifetime essentially working on the mythology of Middle-earth, I think, he would probably find it hard to accept changes that we made or things that weren't exactly like he wrote. But I would hope that he would feel as if he'd been taken to Middle-earth," said Jackson.
