HONEOYE, N.Y. — A state pilot program aimed at reducing harmful algae blooms in Honeoye Lake has proven unsuccessful, but one longtime resident still has concerns about the long-term impacts.
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with Jeff Moore, a fourth-generation Honeoye resident who says Honeoye Lake has been dealing with harmful algae blooms for 25 years. Sandy Bottom Beach along Honeoye Lake has been closed for about a week due to the blooms.
“I just want to be able to people be aware of the problem and what’s going on and see if there’s some way we can stop this,” Moore said.
Pilot Program
In November 2022, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation launched a pilot project to cut back on algae blooms. According to a study published in July, the department applied aluminum sulfate to the deepest parts of the lake, aiming to reduce the conditions that cause algae blooms.
While there were short-term benefits, there were no long-term water quality improvements. Moore is now worried about the future of the lake.
“I really have no idea what it’s going to do to the lake or how toxic it is now. Or what it’s doing. It’s all a big pilot study,” Moore said.
The study said there was no major impact on the habitat conditions, but Moore remains skeptical.
“Well I don’t believe that, because what are they testing,” Moore said.
When asked what he would say to the DEC, Moore was blunt.
“Stay the hell away from my lake,” Moore said.
News10NBC reached out to the DEC for comment but has not heard back.
