ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester celebrated the LGBTQ community over the weekend with the kickoff of Pride Month. While most of the country celebrates Pride Month in June, Rochester celebrates Pride in July.
People gathered at Genesee Valley Park on Sunday for the 54th annual Pride Picnic, which included music, food, arts vendors, and more. Rainbow Seniors ROC hosted the event. One person at the picnic, Patricia Evans, said she’s proud of what Rochester’s LGBTQ activists have accomplished over the decades.
“It started at the U of R, the gay liberation front. There were just a handful of us, and many people from the city started to join us. We had great functions, like dances with live bands, so the students would come and hang out with us too. And it was a time for learning and culture,” Evans said.
On Monday, local elected officials and LGBTQ community members will hold a Pride flag-raising ceremony at the Austin Steward Plaza along the Genesee Riverway Trail. The event will include the sashing of the Pride Grand Marshal and a performance by the Rochester Women’s Community Chorus. The ceremony kicks off at 5:30 p.m. You can see a list of upcoming Pride events on the Rochester LGBTQ+ Together calendar.
When is the annual Pride Festival and Parade?
The Rochester Pride Festival returns to Highland Park on Saturday, July 18. The festival includes a parade, live music, food, arts vendors, and drag.
The celebration kicks off with the Pride Parade at 11 a.m. at South Avenue and Science Parkway. The parade will then head north on Highland Avenue to Highland Park for the festival. General admission for the festival costs $5, and children under 12 are free. You can get tickets online here or at the gate.
The festival runs until 6 p.m. You can see an entertainment lineup for the festival here.
Why does Rochester celebrate Pride a month late?
June is designated as National Pride Month because that’s when the 1969 Stonewall Riots in Manhattan started. However, Rochester celebrates Pride in July, so its celebrations don’t conflict with celebrations in Buffalo and Syracuse, according to Trillium Health. You can learn more in this Good Question.
