Longtime frontman Kelly Hansen stepped away from Foreigner’s touring lineup in 2025 after 20 years with the band. In his place, guitarist and vocalist Luis Maldonado took over behind the mic and helped lead the legendary band forward, along with founding guitarist Mick Jones, who remains closely involved behind the scenes following his Parkinson’s diagnosis.
“These guys are really my brothers, and so for me, my whole motivation was to keep this band together,” Maldonado told The Spokesman-Review. “I just couldn’t see it dispersing.”
The rest of Foreigner’s current lineup includes bassist Jeff Pilson, keyboardist Michael Bluestein, rhythm and lead guitarist Bruce Watson, drummer Chris Frazier, and guitarist/bassist John Roth. The band is pairing the tour extension with an expanded reissue of their 1979 album Head Games in October.
Formed in 1976, the New York City band is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. So, a reflective look back is in order.
After releasing their self-titled debut album in 1977, they followed up the multi-platinum smash featuring anthems like “Feels Like the First Time” and “Cold as Ice” with Double Vision and Head Games. Their 1978 and 1979 albums, respectively, cemented the band as arena-rock titans, while tracks including “Hot Blooded” turned them into radio rock stars.
In 1981, Foreigner released what is widely considered their masterpiece, 4, produced by Mutt Lange. The album spent weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and featured iconic tracks “Juke Box Hero” and “Urgent.”
Three years later, they unleashed what would become one of the greatest power ballads of all time, “I Want to Know What Love Is,” from Agent Provocateur. That one hit No. 1 in both the U.S. and U.K., and has since surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify, joining the platform’s elite Billions Club.
After several lineup changes in the 1990s and early 2000s, Hansen joined Foreigner in 2005 and fronted the band for two decades before Maldonado took over.
Since their founding, Foreigner’s music has found its way into the zeitgeist, with new audiences and generations continuously discovering and rediscovering the band. From Stranger Things and Miami Vice to Arrested Development and Grand Theft Auto, Foreigner’s catalog has continued to find new life in movies and TV.
Now celebrating half a century of rocking out, the band is keeping the Foreigner spirit alive. Ticket, date, and venue information for all upcoming shows is available at foreigneronline.com.
