The two-time Emmy winner, best known for playing the unforgettable Dr. Lilith Sternin on Cheers, appeared at the annual Broadway Barks adoption event in New York City on July 11, where she took the stage cradling a gray-and-white rescue kitten in her arms. The longtime animal advocate smiled as she helped spotlight adoptable pets in hopes of finding them loving homes.

Founded in 1999 by Bernadette Peters and the late Mary Tyler Moore, Broadway Barks has become one of New York City's signature animal adoption events, bringing together Broadway performers, television stars and dozens of rescue organizations each summer. Neuwirth has been a familiar face at Broadway Barks for years, once joking that she's the event's "designated crazy cat lady." Her commitment to animal rescue extends well beyond the annual adoption event.

In a 2025 interview with Catster, Neuwirth spoke warmly about her lifelong love of animals.
"I have always loved them, all of them," said the two-time Tony Award winner.
The actress also shared why Broadway Barks remains so meaningful to her after all these years.
"I love how the community comes together through our love of animals. I love the fact that it is consistently an extremely effective adoption event. So many animals find homes that day year after year. Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore are heroes," said Neuwirth.
Neuwirth currently shares her home with three rescue cats and has often spoken about the joy they bring to her life. In the same interview, she reflected on the simple moments that make pet adoption so rewarding, saying it "does a heart and soul good to be able to rescue animals, give them a safe and healthy home, and love them to pieces."
