U.S. Updates Travel Advisory for Trendy Caribbean Island

Planning an idyllic Caribbean vacay any time soon?

One of the region's trendiest islands just received some bad news. No longer a 'Level 1' destination — the lowest advisory designation doled out by the U.S. State Department — an uptick in crime has bumped this palm-fringed paradise up a warning level.

As of July 10, Saint Lucia has been stamped with a "Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution" label, still on par with the likes of Cancun and Nassau — but no longer in the same low-advisory group as Aruba, among others.

What's Going On In Saint Lucia?

Known for its volcanic black sand shores, staggering pitons, rejuvenating mud baths, and posh all-inclusive resorts, what's commonly been a huge draw sending tourism soaring has been its safe reputation, even with notoriously late-night weekend block parties taking over the capital, Castries.

Prior to the latest advisory update, resorts were largely considered safe havens with one caveat. Back in February, the U.S. Embassy issued a rare security alert singling out one specific property — Ladera Resort.

Take that for what it's worth, but the new State Department advisory explicitly states, "Guests at tourist resorts have been victims of violent crimes."

Additionally, reports of slow response times for emergencies, petty crimes, and scams also played a role in the State Department's decision.

Tips To Stay Safe In Saint Lucia

Per usual, the State Department has provided a laundry list of tips to remain safe should you opt for a Saint Lucia getaway:

Do not resist attempted robberies.Use caution when walking or driving after sundown.Keep a low profile.Remain aware of your surroundings at all times.Do not flash signs of wealth, such as expensive watches or jewelry.Avoid answering the door at your hotel or residence if you do not know them.Stay alert in tourist hotspots.Stay extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
