A royal author revealed that it wasn't Camilla Parker Bowles who ultimately ended the marriage of then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
Ingrid Seward shared her insight from her many years of reporting on the royal family during a 2025 episode of A Right Royal Podcast. She believes that it wasn't the outside influence of Charles' ongoing alleged affair with Camilla that ended his and Diana's marriage.
Seward told podcast hosts Emily Nash and Andrea Caamano that she spoke to the late Princess of Wales just before her untimely death in August 1997. She shared that Diana told her it "wasn't Camilla" that ended her marriage.
"She said to me just before she died, 'It wasn’t Camilla that ruined our marriage. It was the people around Charles.'"

"And I could never unpick that comment and quite understand what it meant. But I also remember Diana’s father [John Spencer] saying how tricky the royal household was."
Diana was said to have felt isolated from Charles' friends and staff members, finding them too traditional and unwelcoming of her more modern approach to life. The couple's age difference was said to have led to incompatibility between the couple. Additionally, Charles' staff was said to remain fiercely loyal to the Prince and his established routines, and often treated the young princess with a dismissive attitude.
Diana was just 20 years old when she married into the royal family, even though she had been a part of their inner circle for most of her life. By contrast, Charles was 32 and well-established in his ways. Having already lived a life of his own, he was actively looking for a mother for his future children when the two wed.
However, their union was fraught with difficulties from the start. Royal biographer Penny Junor told History Extra, “I think Charles and Diana both knew they were making a mistake when they walked down the aisle."
Although he wed Diana, Charles never forgot the woman whom he left behind, Camilla, whom he considered a dear friend. Diana realized her husband still had deep feelings for his ex, but for the first six years of his marriage, Charles and Camilla remained platonic friends.
The couple tried to make their union work. Their sons, Princes William and Harry, were born in 1982 and 1984, and for a time, it was reported that the couple was happy.
Charles and Camilla rekindled their affair, and by 1987, Junor said the pair were romantically involved again. However, alleged infidelity on both sides led to the irreparable breakdown of the couple's marriage.
Charles and Diana separated in 1992. The Princess of Wales revealed in a 1995 BBC interview that there were "three of us" in her marriage "so it was a bit crowded." The couple finalized their divorce in 1996.
