BOARDMAN — The game was tied, but the Canfield 9U baseball team broke out for 11 runs to carry the team to a 14-3 win in the District 2 championship over Poland on Thursday at Fields of Dreams in Boardman.
After Poland fought back to tie the game, Canfield didn’t waste any time regaining control. Poland had to use three pitchers in the fourth inning, but there was little stopping Canfield as it ended the game in the bottom of the fourth.
“I preach to the boys all the time, “Win every inning.’ Just because the other team scores one or two or three, or whatever it is, come back and respond with that many runs or more,” Canfield head coach Brett Bartholomew said.
Davey Heginbotham reached on a one-out infield single, and Leo Dewberry drove him in with a triple to center field. Then Brantley Wade scored Dewberry on an RBI single to shallow left field.
Roman DiMuzio got Poland on the board after he tripled with two outs and later scored on a wild pitch.
Rory Lydon led off the top of the second with a double down the right-field line. A wild pitch allowed him to advance to third.
Travis Bartholomew followed with a walk to put runners at the corners. A throwing error allowed Lydon to score and Travis Bartholomew to move up to second base, pushing Canfield’s lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the second, Nick Dota singled to lead off the frame. Then Harrison Minotti reached on an error and stole second to put runners at second and third.
Emmett Turnbull made it a 3-2 game when he singled to right field, scoring Dota before advancing to second on a throwing error. The tying run scored when Owen Weidenthal popped up on the infield, but the fielder tripped while trying to make the catch, allowing Turnbull to cross.
Canfield took the lead again when Heginbotham scored in the third on an RBI single by Wade. A double by Joey Carbon, an infield single from Johnny Carbon and a throwing error then extended Canfield’s lead to 7-3.
A fielding error allowed Lydon to reach and another run to score. Wild pitches allowed Johnny Carbon and Lydon to cross, and an RBI single from Finn Rousher only continued the offensive surge. Maverick McClure, Heginbotham and Leo Dewberry each added RBI singles to close the scoring in the third with Canfield ahead 14-3.
“I’m proud that we got to this point,” Poland head coach Ricky DiMuzio said. “I think when it comes down to it, the experience that I’ve had playing – I was on that 1997 Poland team that was a win away from the Little League World Series – and the experience I carry with me to teach these kids, ‘Hey, when things don’t go your way, you gotta turn the page, you gotta have short-term memory.
“I’ve been with a lot of these kids since the travel organization that we have with Poland. I love those kids. We win with class; we lose with class. That’s what we’re built on. And I told them, ‘Remember this feeling. You don’t want to feel this way again? We gotta work harder, get better.”
Heginbotham went the distance for Canfield. After allowing three runs in the first three innings, he had a quick shutdown frame to end the game.
“We know we can count on him throwing strikes,” Brett Bartholomew said. “He came out after they tied it up, and he responded well, throwing strikes. We made a couple plays that inning and did well.”
Canfield went 3-0 in the district tournament. It outscored its opponents 37-6, including a 13-3 victory over Poland to open the round.
“I’m just proud of these boys,” Brett Bartholomew said. “They battled hard and came together as a team. Didn’t lose a game in districts, and it was great to see them come together in a great performance.”
