Prosecutors in downstate Cumberland County revealed the shocking details behind the discovery of a dismembered body in Lake Mattoon last month.
Those prosecutors allege that two individuals tried to dispose of the body in the lake by putting it in a trash bag and using weights to drop it to the bottom, but a dismembered arm was discovered by a boater in late June, ultimately leading to two arrests in the case.
According to prosecutors, 38-year-old Dalewayne Turner, a resident of suburban Plainfield, was stabbed to death and his body was dismembered after the crime.
It is alleged, according to court documents, that his half-brother James Adams stabbed him to death and hid his body in the basement of his home for an extended period of time. It is then alleged that Adams, along with 62-year-old Robin Turner, dismembered the body and put it inside of a trash bag, transporting it to Lake Mattoon.
The pair then allegedly put weights in the bag to get it to sink to the bottom of the lake, but a boater from Effingham discovered an arm floating in the water on June 28.
Sammy Flynn of Effingham was on a boat with family and friends Sunday when her father asked her to push what he believed were dead fish away from the group using an oar, she told NBC Chicago. She realized what was floating nearby was something much different as she got a closer look.
“I got up closer to it. I was like, that’s not a fish, guys. I’m pretty sure that’s a human arm,” she told NBC Chicago.
Flynn said a friend quickly confirmed what she had seen, and the group immediately called 911.
An investigation ultimately turned up the rest of Dalewayne Turner’s body, and amid the investigation Robin Turner and Adams were taken into police custody.
Both were facing charges of concealment of a homicidal death and dismemberment of a body, according to prosecutors.
