Andy Cohen Admits Bravo Never Expected Vicki Gunvalson to Become the Face of RHOC

The Real Housewives of Orange County may have started as a "social experiment," but it quickly became the blueprint for one of reality TV's biggest franchises. And while Vicki Gunvalson ultimately emerged as the face of RHOC—and arguably the model for what a Bravo Housewife is—executive producer Andy Cohen admits that's not how he saw her in the beginning.

In a new interview marking the show's 20th season, Cohen revealed he never expected Gunvalson, one of the original cast members, to become the franchise's most enduring star. “I don’t know that in Season 1 we would’ve put all our money on Vicki being the housewife whose story we’re still telling,” Cohen told The New York Times. “As much as her life has changed, she has not changed.”

“Some people feel like they have to do a different personality when they’re on,” Gunvalson said. “I don’t, because I can see right through it.”

While Gunvalson has weathered divorce, heartbreak, new love, and ever-changing friendships, she's never abandoned her work-hard, play-hard philosophy 20 years later. Gunvalson's mix of ambition, love of luxury, and unapologetically emotional personality helped make her one of reality TV's defining stars. Whether she was enthusiastically shouting "Woo-hoo!" and urging everyone to "Whoop it up!" erupting in fiery arguments, or breaking down in tears, she rarely held anything back. Her willingness to let viewers see both her triumphs and her lowest moments cemented her status as the blueprint for the modern Real Housewife.

“I’m a crier, so I’m very emotional and I try to stuff it, but then it wouldn’t be me, you know?” she shared. “So I just let it all hang out and see where it goes.”

Housewives author Brian Moylan observed, "That you’ll never be able to replace with these early-stage Housewives is they weren’t playing Housewives. And in just being herself, Vicki did create the model of what a housewife is supposed to be, which is real, authentic, a little bit crazy, a little bit narcissistic, a little bit delusional.”

Cohen shared that for 20 years, “the world has been reflected through this unlikely insurance agent in Orange County.”

Gunvalson, who took a hiatus for a few seasons and only appeared as a "friend" for a few as well, returns for RHOC Season 20, which premieres on Thursday, July 9 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Bravo.
