Norris rues bitter result after ‘pretty amazing’ lap in Silverstone Q3

Lando Norris cut a frustrated figure after British Grand Prix qualifying, with the home favourite left wondering what more he could possibly have extracted from his McLaren after producing what he believed was a “pretty amazing” lap – only to remain well adrift of the fight for pole.

Silverstone had promised an opportunity to shine in front of a passionate home crowd, but instead it laid bare the scale of McLaren’s current shortcomings.

Norris survived a difficult start to qualifying after languishing down in 11th during Q1 and only just squeezing into the final shootout by progressing from Q2 in 10th place.

When it mattered most, the Briton pieced together a lap he felt could hardly have been improved, climbing to sixth on the grid. Yet the reward was bittersweet, with a deficit of 0.766 seconds to polesitter Kimi Antonelli serving as a stark reminder of how much ground McLaren still has to make up.

“I mean, just tough, we still don't have any pace,” Norris said.

“It was seven-tenths of pole, and I thought my lap was pretty amazing. I was very happy with my lap, improved in every single corner, and I felt like I got everything out of the car.

“So we're just slow, the car was slow in the straights, we're slow in all the corners. There's nothing more I can say apart from that. The car is not very efficient at the minute, which makes it pretty unbelievable that we finished P3 yesterday, considering we're seven-tenths off.

“There's no excuses, the car's not good enough, and we know that, and we just have to keep working hard, that's it.”

    McLaren’s weaknesses exposed

Despite the disappointing outcome, Norris rejected the idea that Silverstone represented a sudden collapse in form. Instead, he argued the circuit merely amplified the weaknesses that have been present throughout the campaign.

While the fast, flowing layout rewards cars that combine straight-line speed with strong cornering performance, Norris believes McLaren currently lacks both.

“It's not often we've been better than P6 this year,” he said. “This track is the perfect highlight of an efficient car, one that's quick in the straight and is good in corners.

“We're bad in both. I was four-tenths off in Austria, in a one-minute track. This is one-minute thirty, and I'm seven-tenths off, so it makes sense. We're not slower, we're just the same.

“I felt happier in the car today. I felt like we got a lot more out of it. Maybe my lap yesterday was just magical, and everyone else didn't do a good job, and today other people did a good job.”

The contrast with Saturday’s earlier sprint race only deepened his sense of disbelief. After battling to a podium finish in third, Norris admitted the qualifying result only reinforced how exceptional that performance had been.

“I mean when you look at this, it makes me more impressed by my own job. If we're 7/10ths off on a single lap, you know, the fact that we could finish P3 earlier today was pretty insane,” he added.

    No time to waste

Although Norris acknowledged the team understands the extent of the challenge, he stressed that simply identifying the problem is no longer enough. With rivals continuing to develop at pace, he warned McLaren cannot afford a gradual recovery if it hopes to return to the front.

“The team knows that time's not on our side, we don't have all day, and all week and all month, to slowly understand it.

British Grand Prix - Qualifying results

“We've got to understand the car now and we've got to bring parts to the car as quickly as possible and quicker than any other team. So, that's just the level we're having to perform at.”

For Norris, the most frustrating part of Saturday was not a mistake behind the wheel, but the realization that even an almost flawless lap was only enough for sixth.
