Max Verstappen was left staring at what might have been after a dramatic final qualifying push at the Red Bull Ring ended with his RB22 buried in the barriers rather than fighting for a place on the second row.
The reigning champion had been squeezing every last drop of performance from a Red Bull package that appeared much closer to the pace at the team’s home circuit, chasing the faster Mercedes cars in the closing moments of Saturday’s qualifying session for the Austrian Grand Prix.
But with the clock running down and a potential front-row challenge within reach, Verstappen’s final attack unravelled in an instant.
A snap at Turn 9 sent him into a spin and brought his qualifying run to a premature halt, leaving him fifth on the grid instead of the P3 position he believes was within his grasp.
A split-second loss that changed the picture
Verstappen revealed the trouble started before the corner where his lap ended, with his Red Bull already feeling unsettled through the high-speed sections of Spielberg’s layout.
The Dutchman said he had not experienced the same issue earlier in the weekend, making the failure at Turn 9 particularly costly.
"That lap, already in Turn 6, I had a very weird snap on entry, because that's basically the second highest speed [corner]. And then when I went into Turn 9, as soon as I turned the wheel I was gone," he explained.

Rather than making a last-second adjustment, Verstappen said he was simply trying to extract more performance from the car while staying within the limits — until the balance suddenly disappeared.
"It felt like a bit of a lack of some downforce or oversteer. I didn't even change anything on the car,” he added.
“There is margin in places, so you try to push a little bit more, but at the same time also not a stupid amount more. But as soon as I turned the wheel it just completely went away."
The crash denied Red Bull a stronger qualifying result, but Verstappen admitted that starting higher up the grid may not have completely changed his Sunday prospects due to the team’s ongoing struggles away from the line.
Lost grid places, but cautious optimism remains
Looking back at the lap, Verstappen estimated the mistake cost him two positions – a frustrating outcome after Red Bull introduced a significant upgrade package at its home race.
"I think realistically we could have been P3, it's a little bit better than P5," the Dutchman told Sky F1.
"But realistically, I think even if we would have been P3, coming off the line is hard for us, so you probably drop back to P5, but that's what it is at the moment."
The new parts appeared to have moved Red Bull closer to the leading teams, but Verstappen was unwilling to declare the upgrade a definitive breakthrough after just one weekend at a short, unique circuit where the field was tightly packed.
"I think we have to wait," he said. "This track is a very short lap, right? Actually, a lot of people were close. I think there's still a few things that we want to understand from the package that worked well, maybe some bits not so well, and then we'll just work from there."

The Frenchman qualified eighth after struggling with front locking at Turns 1 and 3, finishing a tenth and a half behind Verstappen and half a second adrift of pole-sitter George Russell.
For Verstappen, the Austrian qualifying result represented a familiar Formula 1 frustration: a glimpse of a stronger result, lost in the blink of an eye.
