The first season of the romance television series “Every Year After” was released June 10. The highly anticipated adaptation was meant to be the next “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” with Amazon Prime dropping the series just in time for summer — but it fell short of fans’ expectations.
Based on the best-selling novel “Every Summer After” by Carley Fortune, the series takes place in the charming lakeside town of Barry’s Bay, where Percy Fraser has stayed with her family every summer since she was a kid. Her summers are forever changed after she runs into brothers Sam and Charlie Florek, forming a strong attachment to Sam. However, the two have not spoken in 10 years, with Percy seemingly vanishing from Barry’s Bay, only to return to confront past mistakes and attend the sudden funeral of Sam and Charlie’s mother.
The book-to-screen adaptation has the disadvantage of appealing to the vision of the previous readers, with the casting of the leading couple essential for the approval of fans. Both characters are meant to be 28 years old, but Percy is played by a 24-year-old actress, Sadie Soverall. Her youthful appearance, mixed with flashback memories, leads to a confusing timeline.
In the flashback scenes, the lead couple is replaced by their younger versions, with the actors of male protagonist Sam Florek and brother Charlie Florek, played by Matt Cornett and Michael Bradway, respectively. These characters are completely unrecognizable from their younger versions.
The three characters are shown over six summers, supposedly growing with time, until it randomly jumps from the child actors to their adult counterparts. The same adult actors are used in both the teenage and current timelines, failing to create the illusion of growing older, along with the adult actors appearing in their mid-20s for characters 28 years old.
The faithfulness of an adaptation does not measure its success, as demonstrated by the modernization and changes of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” that were still received well by the majority of fans. Although, this series has taken some changes too far, stripping the value and nostalgia of the characters in the novel that so many loved. The couple has a difficult time staying in the spotlight due to the crowded additions and subplots of Percy’s best friends, Delilah and Chantel. Another major change and risk was the unsatisfactory, cliffhanger ending, setting up for an unnecessary second season in an already almost-concluded series.
“Every Year After” also makes great strides in modernizing the series. Carly Fortune’s book was released in 2022, but the present timeline of the series takes place in 2026. The dreamy, nostalgic setting of the lakeside town makes a modern setting difficult to accomplish, almost appearing frozen in time somewhere between 2016 and the present.
With this blend of today and yesterday, the soundtrack becomes an even more daunting obstacle to feat. The series has an instrumental score, composed by Tom Howe, along with an official soundtrack album of featured popular artists, such as Lana Del Rey, Sombr and Billie Eilish. These modernized tracks, accompanied by the time capsule-like setting, do not seem to line up, creating a clashing visual and audio experience that deprives the beloved nostalgic setting.
Even with its confusing appearance, the series still has a never-ending summer feel that is addictive. Visually, the wooden, cozy tavern and gleaming lake bring back part of what the modernization is pulling away — a wistful small town love story. Nevertheless, the reminiscent feeling is not enough to compensate for the visually stunting changes that resulted in a disappointing first season that could have stayed a cherished novel.
