Chicago Cubs Lineup: Game 2 of the Doubleheader

CUBS LINEUP — The Cubs have already guaranteed themselves a series split in New York, but they have a chance to lock in a series win before our free watch party tomorrow for the finale (are you coming?). Shota Imanaga, who was originally slated to pitch on both Sunday and Monday before the rainouts, takes the mound in this one versus Mets lefty Sean Manaea.

And here’s a look at the Cubs lineup for Game 2 of the Doubleheader.

    Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Matt Shaw, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Alex Bregman, 3B Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Carson Kelly, C Pedro Ramirez, DH Dansby Swanson, SS

Sean Manaea is getting hit MUCH MUCH harder by righties than lefties this season, and I think that explains the Cubs lineup today as much as the fact that it’s Game 2 of a doubleheader:

    vsLHH: .241/.277/.367 (.284 wOBA)vsRHH: .275/.362/.466 (.361 wOBA)

Those wOBAs are lower for his career against both types of hitters, but the gap persists nonetheless.

With that in mind, Ian Happ is getting the night off. Michael Conforto also sits. In their place, Matt Shaw heads out to left, Seiya Suzuki to right, and Pedro Ramirez (switch hitter) slides in at DH.

Alex Bregman and Carson Kelly, who both sat the first game, are in there, as well. It’s always difficult to pull off a doubleheader sweep, but I don’t hate the Cubs chances tonight … assuming the improvements we’ve seen from Shota Imanaga in his two starts against the Rockies carry forward. At least the wind is blowing in …

    New York Mets Lineup:

Carson Benge, LF Francisco Lindor, SS Bo Bichette, 3B Mark Vientos, 1B Marcus Semien, 2B Francisco Alvarez, C Eric Wagaman, DH AJ Ewing, CF Brett Baty, RF

    Pitching Matchup:

    Chicago Cubs: Shota Imanaga, LHP

Over four starts from May 18 to June 4, Imanaga gave up 26(!) earned runs with a ridiculous 12 home runs allowed. But things have taken a nice little turn in each of his last two games against a weaker Rockies squad (albeit in hitter-friendly conditions both times). That includes no homers and 10Ks over 10.2 IP.

Perhaps, then, he’s going to head into this game with a little more confidence.

All that said, Imanaga was originally slated to start on Sunday (rained out) and then on Monday (also rained out), pushing him back to tonight’s doubleheader. Did that give him some extra, needed rest? Or did it mess with his routine too much? I guess we’ll find out.

On the bright side, the Mets are not particularly strong versus left-handed pitching (91 wRC+ on the year). Go get ’em, Shota.

New York Mets: Sean Manaea, LHP

Sean Manaea has solid strikeout (23.6%) and walk (7.6%) rates this season, and he’s managing contact well enough, too. Nonetheless, he’s carrying a well-below-average 4.64 ERA into this one over 54.1 IP (only two starts, plus 14 relief appearances).

However, most of the damage he has allowed occurred earlier in the season. And since May 10 (his last 32.0 IP), Manaea has given up just 11 ER (3.09 ERA) with peripherals to match the performance.

My point? I’m not sure he’s quite as juicy of a matchup as the ERA would otherwise suggest.
