Futures Championship finalist Daniel Xia will be headed east next season, as he has announced his verbal commitment to swim for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill beginning in the fall of 2027.

The Washington native is a senior at Redmond High School, where he has competed for the school’s varsity swimming and diving team since his sophomore year. He also trains year-round with Wave Aquatics, primarily specializing in free, breast and IM.
Xia competed at the 2025 Winter Junior Championships – West in December, where he logged a personal best time in all four of his events. He placed 25th in the 200 IM (1:48.94), 36th in the 200 breast (2:01.44) and 53rd in the 100 breast (56.11); he also contested the 50 free (21.24).
At the BC Premier Invitational in March, Xia turned in another series of fast swims. He took 4th in the 200 free (1:38.31 – PB) and 200 IM (1:47.46 – PB), 7th in the 100 breast (55.46) and 17th in the 100 fly (49.57 – PB). He also clocked a lifetime best time in the 100 free (45.16) as the leadoff on the 400 free relay.
A week later, Xia raced at the SwimStrong Dryland National Championship and posted two more personal best performances. He won the 200 IM (1:48.99), 400 IM (3:59.49 – PB) and 200 breast (2:01.74), and he placed 2nd in the 100 breast (55.91), 3rd in the 100 fly (49.80) and 10th in the 100 back (1:01.45) after setting a best time of 52.67 during prelims.
Xia earned a second swim in five individual events at the 2026 Futures Championships (LCM) in Sacramento over the summer. He took 3rd in the 200 IM (2:05.05) after posting a best time of 2:04.79 during prelims, and he placed 5th in the 100 breast (1:03.58 – PB), 7th in the 200 breast (2:19.73), 10th in the 100 free (51.70 – PB), 15th in the 400 IM (4:37.09 – PB) and 18th in the 50 breast (29.65 – PB).

100 breast – 55.14 200 breast – 2:01.44 200 IM – 1:47.46 400 IM – 3:59.49 50 free – 20.93 100 free – 45.16 200 free – 1:38.31A Division I program in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the UNC men took 8th out of 15 teams at last season’s conference championships before sending five athletes to compete at the NCAA Division I Championship, where they placed 19th overall. To earn a second swim at the 2026 ACCs, it took times of 52.95/1:56.17 in the 100/200 breast, 1:44.99/4:48.98 in the 200/400 IM and 19.46/42.67/1:34.69 in the 50/100/200 free, putting Xia outside the cutoff in each of his top events.
On the team itself, Xia would have ranked 5th in the 200 breast, 6th in the 100 breast and 8th in the 200 IM and 400 IM last season. With six senior swimmers on the roster this year, Xia will help bridge some of the gaps left behind heading into next fall.
Currently set to join Xia in the Tar Heels’ class of 2031 are Nemanja Maksic, Nate Caswell, Dmitriy Oranskiy, Jack Martin, Issac Adanin and Hampton Stuecker, who should all make for strong training partners over their four years together.
