I’m in a bit of a daze after that one. The Edward Cabrera injury hangs like a cloud (up there with a storm of other Cubs injury clouds), and he’s going to be out for a while. Couple that with another night where the bullpen struggles to hang onto even a massive lead and the pitching situation is completely untenable.
Otherwise, I want to enjoy the offensive side of the game – that stupid call at second base notwithstanding – because the Cubs’ bats really showed up again. Big nights from Dansby Swanson, Carson Kelly, and, obviously, Pete Crow-Armstrong. If the pitching can’t carry the day any time soon, then the bats really need to get hot again collectively.
It’s hardly the most important consideration for Cabrera on the night, but, because of the timing of the injury, the Cubs got only five innings from their starting pitcher the night before a double-header (and when the starter on Thursday might be Matthew Boyd on a pitch count). The bright side – can we even use that expression right now? – is that the Cubs will get a 27th man for the double-header, and also could immediately IL Cabrera and bring up another reliever for extra coverage for tomorrow (i.e., until Boyd is officially activated on Thursday).
The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is, oh, I’m gonna say Dansby Swanson. He had a great night at the plate, and he’s really needed some wins. Hopefully the the last week is the start of something.
