Keith Richards Reveals Why the Rolling Stones May Be Done With Touring

More than 60 years after helping define rock 'n' roll, the Rolling Stones are still releasing new music. However, Keith Richardsrecently acknowledged that the legendary band's touring days may be behind them.

With the release of their new album, Foreign Tongues, set for July 19, the Rolling Stones have no plans to stop making music. They also recently released their newest single, "In the Stars," which has dominated the Billboard charts. While the band has previously stated they won't be touring in 2026, Richards says that the band may never tour again.

In an interview with Uncut alongside his bandmates Mick Jaggerand Ronnie Wood, he says traveling is a major dealbreaker. The 82-year-old and the band have been touring around the world since the start of their careers, but Richard admits live performances aren't out of the picture.

“I don't know if tours are possible,” Richards said. “It's the traveling that takes it out of you. But I do see the possibility of us doing residency somewhere.”

“Wherever it is, London, New York, Paris, anywhere. I'll play Rome! But I don't see why they shouldn't be able to throw some shows together in a new format.”

In recent years, many artists have opted out of extensive world tours for more consistent residencies in one major city. Rod Stewarthad a long-running residency in Las Vegas, and Aerosmith's Deuces Are Wild residency was a major hit. Other legendary bands like The Eagles performed multi-night residencies rather than traditional tours. KISS also announced post-farewell residency plans.

Woods chimed in that none of them are "getting any younger" and "none of us are getting out of here alive." While pondering if performing live is still exciting at this stage of their careers, he admits that it'll be exciting until one day he says, "That's it."

“I mean, what am I gonna do? Jesus Christ. It's necessary for me – at gunpoint, if needs be – to keep a band together. ‘You will play drums!' I do my bit, but it's an incredible gift from everybody else. I didn't expect this in return," Richards said.

Earlier this year, Richards revealed they had no plans to tour to promote their new album. Richards teased that next year might be different, and they are still figuring out what's next for the band following their latest release. His bandmate, on the other hand, thinks differently, with Jagger saying he “would love to tour the album." He, too, admitted it won't be in 2026.
