Yashasvi Jaiswal reveals Gautam Gambhirs role behind his ODI form revival

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who joined the ODI team as the replacement of the injured Virat Kohli, left a strong statement by scoring a match-defining century against Afghanistan in the third of the three-match ODI series. The century of Jaiswal is crucial, as the team is heading for another ODI World Cup, which will be held in 2027.

Jaiswal was named the best player of the match yesterday for his unbeaten 110-run knock in Chennai. After the match, the young opener talked about how Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has backed him throughout the series.

Ahead of the 3-match ODI series, Yashasvi Jaiswal was not at his best during the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) with the Rajasthan Royals. The inclusion of the Uttar Pradesh-born in the ODI team was a bit of a surprise move by the selectors. He was added in Virat Kohli’s place, who was ruled out of the contest because of a hamstring injury. While Virat is mostly a number 3 batter, Jaiswal is a pure opener.

In the first match of the recently concluded ODI series against Afghanistan, Yashasvi Jaiswal was on the bench as the skipper Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma opened the innings. In another surprising move, in the 2nd ODI, Gill demoted himself to number three, and Jaiswal came to open the innings.

The southpaw was dismissed for only 4 runs in the second match, but bounced back strongly by smashing a match-winning century in the third. After the match, the top order batter mentioned that without the support of the head coach Gautam Gambhir, he would not have achieved the success.

Jaiswal explains the role of Gautam Gambhir

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a special video where Yashasvi Jaiswal explains how he managed to play the stand-out knock, his work experience with Gautam Gambhir, and what his next move will be, in the lead-up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

In the video, the 24-year-old batter mentioned that Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the national team, had been regularly speaking with him and providing valuable guidance. The batter further mentioned that he enjoyed working hard in the nets, learning new things, & improving his game under Gambhir's mentorship, despite the hot and humid conditions.

“Gautam sir has been speaking to me, and I know what's going on, so I really enjoy working with him. He is always talking to someone. Really enjoys working hard in this heat, and going into the nets again and again and again, to learn new things, so it’s been amazing,” Yashasvi Jaiswal said in the video shared by the board on their official website.

    Jaiswal's ODI career so far

With the hundred and ten not out, Jaiswal has improved his ODI batting stats. After making his debut in the format in 2025, he has so far scored 285 runs in 6 matches with a couple of centuries. Currently, the batting average in the format is 71.25.
