Couple dies from carbon monoxide poisoning tied to generator use in NW Indiana

Two people were killed by carbon monoxide in northwest Indiana when they tried to use a generator after losing power in the aftermath of storms last week.

The couple was identified as Sal and Debbie Fogu, described as the friendly couple at Lakeshore Camp Resort in Portage.

“They helped anybody,” said Vicki, their sister-in-law. “No matter what situation it was. Both of them. Debbie kind of let Sal lead the show. They loved people, family. They were just the nicest people. They helped everyone at the campsite. It’s going to be a big loss for all of us.”

The relative said Sal and Debbie helped everyone.

“His favorite thing was cooking on Saturday, a big meal, and his favorite things was steak with cheese on top of it. And mac and cheese and baked beans,” she explained. “He would invite everyone. His lot would be so full that you’d have to whip out the hamburger and hot dogs just to feed everybody.”

On Saturday morning, the Palos Hills, Illinois, couple was found, accidentally poisoned by carbon monoxide from a portable generator used during power outages. According to fire officials, the generator was outside a window air conditioner.

“We all had the generators. We don’t know what happened,” Vicki said. “We know carbon monoxide. We don’t know how. It’s just shocking for us, shocking.”

An epidemiologist from the Illinois Department of Public Health explained carbon monoxide is often called the “silent killer.” It’s an colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that can cause serious illness and death if inhaled.

“It does cause symptoms that are similar to other illnesses,” epidemiologist Benjamin Fletcher said. “Headache, fatigue, shortness of breath… Similar to other illnesses. But may end up being carbon monoxide poisoning.”

Illinois recently released its first carbon monoxide report, which covered 2019 to 2023.

“In that time we were able to identify 113 different emergency department [visits] or hospitalizations that were linked to the improper use of generators,” Fletcher said.
