CUBS LINEUP — Last night’s game was WAY closer than it should have been, and that’s because, despite PCA’s heroics and the productive final inning, the Cubs were awful with runners in scoring position yet again. As Brett examined earlier, it’s kind of their thing.
Will they have better luck tonight? Maybe! Here’s a look at the Cubs lineup, featuring Matt Shaw in right field.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Alex Bregman, 3B Michael Busch, 1B Seiya Suzuki, DH Ian Happ, LF Nico Hoerner, 2B Matt Shaw, RF Miguel Amaya, C Dansby Swanson, SSGiven the way Swanson, Hoerner, Moises Ballesteros, and Michael Conforto have (not) been swinging it lately — plus the lower body injury Seiya Suzuki sustained on Saturday — this may have been an ideal stretch to work Matt Shaw into more starting lineups anyway. But after two hits (including a triple) and his walk-off walk last night, he’s certainly earned it regardless.
Given how important he might be to the rest of this season — and beyond — I certainly hope Shaw can swing a good bat. He’s got great speed and I think, eventually, could be a fine corner outfielder. Let’s hope that all starts tonight with the wind blowing out.
With Shaw in right field, Suzuki is the DH. That bumps Ballesteros to the bench. Can the Cubs win another series? Is that allowed? Stay tuned and find out at 7:05.
Colorado Rockies Lineup:
Jake McCarthy, RF Willi Castro, 3B TJ Rumfiel, 1B Hunter Goodman, DH Troy Johnston, LF Cole Carrigg, CF Brett Sullivan, C Ezequiel Tovar, SS Edouard Julien, 2BPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Edward Cabrera, RHP
Edward Cabrera’s first start off the IL went very, very poorly. But, interestingly, his fastball velocity was up a couple clicks from where it had been for most of the season. And in his next start, against these same Rockies, it was up even higher. And he was able to turn that into 5.1 innings of 2-run baseball, with just two walks and five strikeouts.
There was a bit too much hard contact for my liking, and just a 40% groundball rate, but it definitely felt like an improvement over where he had been.
He’ll want to keep the ball on the ground tonight, though, because the wind is evidently howling out at Wrigley.
Colorado Rockies: Ryan Feltner, RHP
Ryan Feltner has not had a particularly strong season overall, but he had a couple of nice starts against the Giants and Brewers before facing the Cubs last week in the finale:
vsSFG: 6.0 IP, 4H, 0ER, 0BB, 2KvsMIL: 6.0 IP, 1H, 1ER, 2BB, 4KvsCHC: 4.1 IP, 4H, 6ER, 3BB, 3K
But take note: Feltner went nine up, nine down to start that game before things broke open in the fourth. This was the guy Seiya Suzuki hit his grand slam against. Still just four total hits allowed, though. Cubs may have gotten a little lucky on the sequencing. Let’s hope they have similar (or, hey, how about even better) luck tonight. The wind is HOWLING out again, and he’s not much of a groundball pitcher this year, so at least there’s that.
