The Archdiocese of Chicago announced on Monday Queen of Martyrs School won’t reopen for the 2026-2027 school year. Greg Richmond, superintendent of schools, said in a letter it became clear in recent weeks that a significant number of students would not be returning, leaving projected enrollment at “a level the school could not sustain.”
Enrollment stood at 178 students this past year; officials said projected enrollment for next year was only about 140 students.
“The decline in next year’s enrollment would create an under-resourced school, unable to provide the quality education students need and deserve,” Richmond said. “Fewer students means fewer resources to provide the modern, rigorous, and holistic education that parents expect from a Catholic school.”
Earlier this year, a substitute teacher was fired after a history of child molestation was uncovered.
The superintendent acknowledged “concerns related to a personnel matter, shook the trust of some families and contributed to their decision to leave” but said the school’s challenges aren’t the result of a single event, noting it has experienced a long-term decline in enrollment.
Officials said the school would likely face a deficit exceeding $400,000 next year. The Archdiocese plans to assist families wishing to transition to other Catholic schools in the Chicago area.
