Winter Juniors qualifier Drew Hilsmier has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Northwestern University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am beyond honored to announce my verbal commitment to Northwestern University! A rising senior at Vestavia Hills High School in Alabama, Hilsmier has been a member of the school’s varsity swimming team for his freshman and junior seasons. He trains year-round with Wake Aquatics, where he primarily specializes in sprint freestyle, butterfly, and backstroke.
Hilsmier is coming off a 2025-26 short course season that saw him drop over three seconds in the 100 fly, nearly two seconds in the 100 free and 100 back, and almost a full second in the 50 free. At the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) State Championships in November, he claimed his first state titles, winning the 100 fly (49.67) and leading off the victorious 400 free relay (45.27), while also finishing third in the 100 back (51.18) and leading off the third-place 200 medley relay (23.20), all personal bests.
Hilsmier also qualified and competed at Winter Juniors for the first time this past season. At the East location in December, he finished 37th in the 50 free (20.53), 95th in the 100 fly (50.51), and 108th in the 100 free (46.31), with the 50 free standing as his current lifetime best.
He closed the season with one final PB, lowering his 100 back to 50.17 at the Southeastern Championship Meet at the end of February.

To earn a second swim at the meet, it took times of 20.19/43.71 in the 50/100 free, 46.48 in the 100 fly, and 46.54 in the 100 back, putting him a bit outside the cutoffs, though he still has two full seasons of training ahead before swimming at his first conference meet.
Hilsmier joins Spencer Belbot, Kealan Tupper, and Taylor Thongintra in committing to the Wildcat’s class of 2031 so far.
