What a whipsaw the last few days have been for Alex Bregman. His continued second half dominance to his big racehorse win to taking a freak foul ball off the face and having to be rushed to the hospital.
Bregman, after posting an immediate “after” picture yesterday, has shared another from this morning, and it’s obvious his face is still extremely swollen. The eye appears to still be swollen shut as well.
The hopes, in order of importance:
That he’s OK in a life sense.
This box seems to have been checked by virtue of his having been in and then out of the hospital, and posting updates on social media. In terms of life-related risks, thankfully that hurdle has been cleared.
That he’s OK in an impairment sense.
This was the more realistic Big Scary Awful Worry when someone takes a baseball up near the eye. What you hope is that – for his daily life purposes – Bregman suffered no kind of impairment to his vision. Set aside baseball; it’s just a scary looking injury for anyone to have, and I hope there are no long-term effects.
That he’s OK in a baseball sense long-term.
To that end, if there are no long-term effects to Bregman’s vision for life purposes, then you’d also hope he wouldn’t be impacted on the baseball field. The nature of the sport is such that even slight changes in visual perception can be devastating, so I just hope there was no long-term impact there. Even if it takes an offseason to recover fully, that’s what I’ll hope for most.
That he’s OK in a baseball sense short-term.
Now the greedy hope. Well, maybe not greedy, because I’m sure it’s also his and everyone associated with the organization’s hope. We hope that Bregman can get back for the playoffs and be himself. Having seen the injury and the pictures, that just seems like a really aggressive wish, so I don’t have any expectations. Mostly thinking longer-term, but with him being so impactful and important to this team, I have to hope he can come back and be the guy he’s been in the second half.
If that isn’t possible, the good news is that the Cubs are covered at third base better than most clubs who lost their starter would be. Matt Shaw and Pedro Ramirez are starting-caliber players in their own right, and not many teams have that available. Of course, not many teams had a 5-win Alex Bregman as their starter, though.
With the off-day today, I don’t anticipate getting much in the way of an update. The tests were done at the hospital yesterday, and Alex Bregman was allowed to travel home with the team. So that’s good. But we’ll probably find out before tomorrow night’s game more of the prognosis, i.e., whether there’s any hope whatsoever for Bregman to return this season.
