Oscar-Winner’s WWII Thriller Quietly Becomes the Must-See Movie of the Summer

Following his Oscar win for The Whale, Brendon Fraser’s career renaissance has only swelled. From Killers of the Flower Moon, to Rental Family, to now Pressure, the 57-year-old actor is killing the game. Not so much with blockbusters or bloated action flicks but with thoughtful, refined, and deftly handed cinema.

Pressure, the latest from Focus Features, is a drama thriller that homes in the fraught 72 hours before D-Day. Directed by Anthony Maras (Hotel Mumbai), the film stars Fraser as General Dwight D. Eisenhower opposite Andrew Scott (1984, Spectre) as Captain James Stagg, a Scottish meteorologist, and focuses on the high-stakes weather forecasting leading up to the invasion.

“It’s the story of Andrew Scott’s character, standing in the stream like a boulder and knowing the future and that it is bad news, and he must convince immutable individuals, right if they ignore him, it’s at everyone’s peril,” Fraser told Variety, “and he is but a lowly nerdy biologist meteorologist, and as a non-commissioned officer, he was kicked upstairs.”

With the fate of the war on their shoulders, the two must decide whether to unleash history’s largest, most dangerous seaborne invasion — or delay and risk losing everything. Rounding out the cast are Kerry Condon, Damian Lewis, Chris Messina, and Tamsin Topolski.

Now released in theaters nationwide, the film is quietly becoming the sleeper hit of the season. According to Collider, Pressure is breathing down the necks of the war films that have come before it, challenging their numbers at the box office.

“With $11 million in the bank, Pressure is poised to surpass the $14 million domestic haul of Nuremberg, starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek,” the outlet writes. “In 10 days, the movie has quadrupled the domestic box-office haul of the 2016 WWII film Anthropoid, starring Cillian Murphy as one of the real-life Czech soldiers who executed an assassination plot against a high-ranking Nazi official.”

Holding strong at No. 9 in the domestic Top 10, Pressure is being mentioned in the same breath as current box office heavyweights like Scary Movie, Backrooms, and Masters of the Universe. The film also boasts a Rotten Tomatoes score of 86% from critics and a 95% from audiences. So, go ahead and book a ticket. Consider it mission orders.

Pressure is now playing at theaters nationwide.
