Cricket Ireland provides update on India T20Is amid unrest in Belfast, decision to be taken in 48 hours

Cricket Ireland has informed that it is monitoring the situation in the country closely and that a call on India’s tour will be taken with the next 48 hours. This comes amid the growing unrest in Belfast – the same venue at which India are scheduled to play two T20Is on June 26 and 28. The Men in Blue last toured Ireland way back in 2023.

Cricket Ireland to take call on India tour

In a statement issued, Cricket Ireland informed that the board is closely monitoring the situation in areas that are witnessing community unrest. The board said that a call on the IRE vs IND T20Is as well as the Irish Senior Cup will be taken within the next two days. As per the BBC, unrest has gripped Belfast, with some houses and automobiles being set on fire, public transport being paused, a knife attack forcing people to leave their homes.

“Cricket Ireland is continuing to monitor the situation in areas currently experiencing community unrest and will make a decision within the next 48 hours regarding this Sunday’s Irish Senior Cup and National Cup fixtures. We remain in close consultation with the relevant authorities and our provincial unions. The safety and security of players, coaches, match officials, and supporters is paramount in our deliberations. Further updates will be provided as they become available,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, India have named a new captain for the series against Ireland which will be followed by a three-match series against England. Shreyas Iyer has replaced Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20I skipper, with the latter not just losing the leadership role, but also a spot in the team. Tilak Varma has been named his deputy. 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has been impressive over the last two years, has been handed his maiden India call-up. The last time the two sides met in the shortest-format of the game was in June 5 2024 in the T20 World Cup.
