Avalanche not ready to panic, look to fix inconsistencies

The Colorado Avalanche have had a rocky start to the season, but it’s not time to panic. As the team struggles to find consistency, head coach Jared Bednar is putting his foot down — lightly.

“You’ve got to be patient for a little bit in the season, and we have been. We’ve talked about a lot of things, and then we show some promise and play some good games, and that’s the thing,” Bednar said after the 7-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. “It’s hot, cold, hot, cold right now. It’s about consistency. Now I have to change my approach to the way I handle the inconsistencies in our game.”

The Avs have 19 points with a 9-6-1 record and sit fourth in the Central Division. The good news is they have only lost one regulation game at home; the bad news is they have lost five on the road.

“We had those games where we started playing pretty good hockey, and it was two periods on, one off, or one on. We’re playing 40 minutes a night, still winning hockey games,” Bednar said. “But we’ve had a couple games where we’re a no-show with that engagement and the commitment to defend, especially, and then the rest of the game just falls apart from there.”

It’s typical for a team to take time to find its rhythm, but after 16 games, the inconsistency needs to be addressed. Some of the players have mentioned mindset, while others have talked about energy.

“We know what we have to do to win games, and it’s pretty simple. So we just have to continue to do it,” Cale Makar said.

    Bednar’s message to the team

The Avalanche’s bench boss said he has addressed his team as a whole, by lines, and individually to get to the root of the issues. And not all are the same.

“As you get to this point now, that you have another game that was no good, it becomes more important for me to know what the mindset is, and it can be different for different individuals,” Bednar said.

But for his team as a whole, his message was leveling up.

“Everybody’s finding another gear and an extra, just bump it up a notch. To start the season, we’ve liked a lot of games, but we’ve disliked a lot of games as well,” Nazem Kadri said. “And we’re a good enough team to obviously understand what it takes to win. We’re going to look for that, stepping forward into the season.”
