Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Banks, who both starred in The Hunger Games trilogy from 2012 to 2015, recently sat down for Variety’sActors on Actors series. During their talk, the pair got candid about their relationship with the hit franchise, which turned Hutcherson into a household name.
When speaking about their time filming the original movie, Banks said, “I felt like your auntie. I was everyone’s auntie. And then I really got to relax on the second one, because there were a lot more adults my age. Obviously, The Hunger Games was life-changing for you and Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth. What was that like? We had so much fun on the press tours.”
Hutcherson responded, “It was crazy. It was such a massive machine, and it was such a formative time of my life. We all went through so many changes together. We leaned on each other, hard-core. It was really intimidating. I’m from a small town in Kentucky. I started acting when I was a kid because I liked the idea of making movies. Fame was never on my radar — and then I was thrust into that world in such a big way. It was a lot.”

Hutcherson continued, “For a long time, I was resentful toward it, because I didn’t want that kind of attention.”
However, he revealed that he no longer feels that way. “I was chip-on-my-shoulder angry about it. With years of perspective, I have grown to appreciate it so much,” he said, then went on to speak about how excited he is for the new movies.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be in theaters this November. It follows a young version of Haymitch Abernathy, who was originally portrayed by Woody Harrelson. He will be portrayed by Joseph Zada in the newest film.
Hutcherson and Banks are appearing in new projects, as well. Banks has been starring in The Miniature Wife, a science fiction romcom on Peacock about a woman who shrinks after a failed lab experiment. Meanwhile, Hutcherson is appearing on the HBO comedy, I Love LA, which is about a close friend group who gets together after spending years apart.
