Bangladesh pacer Nahid Rana has been punished by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for his inappropriate behavior during the first of the ongoing three-match ODI series against Australia.
The Tiger brigade registered an emphatic win over Australia to kick off the bilateral contest. In the second innings of the first match at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka, Nahin Rana found himself in a controversial episode with the Australian stand-in captain Josh Inglis.
The Bangladesh fast bowler dismissed Inglis in a crucial moment of the match, when the middle-order batter was trying to settle things for his team after sustaining a couple of blows early in the run chase. Nahid Rana delivered a back-of-the-length delivery for the first delivery of the eleventh over, which was shaping away from the batter.
Inglis, in the process of dabbing the ball on the ground, produced an outside edge. The ball was behind, where Litton Das made no mistake to take the chance cleanly. It was a 147.9 KMPH delivery by the Bangladesh quick, which surprised the batter instantly.
What did happen in the middle?
On the heat of the moment, Rana showed some aggression to the departed batter, which the Council did take on a serious note. In an official press release, ICC accused Nahin Rana of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
“Nahid (Rana) was found to have breached Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to 'using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match,” ICC said in an official press release.
It is further mentioned that the accused bowler has accepted his offence to the match referee, Prakash Bhatt.
“Nahid admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for a formal hearing,” it added.
It is learnt that it is the second time that the Bangladesh international has been accused of breaching the code. Last year in November, during a Test match against Ireland at Sylhet, Nahid Rana was handed a demerit point and fined 25% of the match fee for throwing the ball aggressively at the Ireland batter Cade Carmichael's pads.
Nahid Rana received support from his teammate
On the latest incident against Josh Inglis, Nahid Rana had the support of his teammate Mosaddek Hossain, who accused the opposing batter of the episode.
“It was basically frustration from the batter after getting out. It was a misunderstanding, nothing serious. It’s better to leave what happens on the field, on the field," Mosaddek told the reporters in the post-match press conference.
Bangladesh won the match by 86 runs through the DLS method. Batting first, they scored 284 runs in 50 overs with Hossain’s unbeaten 86. The inexperienced playing eleven of Australia showed some resilience in the middle, but that was not enough to win the match.
