We’ll have more from Ben Johnson’s press conference on Day 1 of the team’s mandatory minicamp. But not before you get to hear what the Chicago Bears head coach had to say about Colston Loveland.
Check it out:

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) June 9, 2026Typing out this full quote and reading it back put a big, goofy smile on my face:
“This offseason has been full tilt. I love what he brings to the table. He’s one of the most consistent players I’ve been around, and that’s saying a lot for a young guy because I think it takes a while before guys can truly understand what it means to be a professional. But he’s in early, he’s always in his playbook, he’s always in his notes.
I think he really thrives with being available in the pressure moments. That’s the type of guy that he wants to be. Lots of trust with the coaching staff, with the quarterbacks. And so I’m really happy with where he’s at right now. We’ve been able to take the route tree to the next level, and it’s something we’re going to continue to develop in training camp as well.”
What stands out to me about the pull quote above is Ben Johnson mentioning that Colston Loveland’s route tree is expanding. This is the second time the Bears’ head coach has name-checked a player expanding their route tree this offseason. If you’ll recall, Johnson mentioned it when talking about the evolution of rising second-year wide receiver Luther Burden III.
“He’s in a really good spot,” Johnson said during his media availability during OTAs in late May. “He’s still developing and growing his route tree. Coach El and Isaiah Ford, they’ve done a phenomenal job with him, working to develop those things. Speed cuts, to sharp breaks, releases, things of that nature. He’s been extremely coachable.”
I’m choosing to read Johnson’s words as a positive sign that two of his top young pass catchers are ready to take another step in their progression. This is encouraging news when you consider that D.J. Moore’s departure means there are a bunch of targets and touches that are up for grabs. The way I see it, Loveland and Burden are in a prime position to get those looks from quarterback Caleb Williams.

Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson doesn’t usually gush over players, so it stands out to hear him say what he did about Colston Loveland. It makes me believe that things are lining up for him to have another big year in this offense. If you want to dream big about what could be in store for Loveland in 2026, know that he drew a favorable comp to Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta from Johnson after he was drafted. And that stands out to me because Johnson is often (if not almost always) hesitant to make one-for-one player comps. But based on Loveland’s rookie production, I can see where the Bears head coach was coming from with that comparison.
Colston Loveland was the Bears’ most productive pass catcher in 2025. As a rookie tight end, Loveland led the team in receptions (58) and receiving yards (713) while finishing in a three-way tie for the team lead in touchdown catches (6) with D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze. That was a pretty gnarly first season as a pro for Loveland. And judging by what his head coach had to say, it sounds like the University of Michigan product was only scratching the surface in Year 1.
