Alice and Steve ending explained: Writer teases future after shock cliffhanger

Alice and Steve takes viewers through a whirlwind few months for two longtime best friends, who are torn apart by one shocking decision that changes their lives forever.

Nicola Walker (Mary & George) and Jemaine Clement (Avatar) play the title characters, who find themselves in a spiteful war after Steve suddenly embarks on a romantic relationship with Alice's 20-something daughter, Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith).

Having briefly dated themselves many moons ago, Alice finds Steve's new fascination utterly outrageous, and goes to great lengths to either split the couple up or destroy her former friend – whichever comes first.

As we begin the Alice and Steve finale, it seems that those efforts have all been in vain, until a couple of last-minute twists suggest that this story isn't over just yet.

Here's your guide to the Alice and Steve ending on Disney+, including an update from the writer on whether we can expect more. Be warned: full spoilers follow for Alice and Steve.

    Alice and Steve ending explained

Alice and Steve ends on a shocking cliffhanger, which leaves both of the feuding main characters in a life-or-death situation.

Despite Alice's various machinations, she is unable to keep Steve and Izzy from forging ahead with their relationship, which ultimately leads to an impromptu wedding.

The romance escalates after Izzy learns that she's pregnant and, initially, believes Steve to be the father. Alas, the couple are dealt a rather large speed bump when they discover that the baby actually belongs to her ex, Yannis.

Steve still wishes to be involved, learning from how Daniel (Joel Fry) lovingly raised Izzy as his own daughter, with their nuptials intended to secure the future rapidly taking shape ahead of them.

However, it isn't long before cracks in the foundations start to show.

Steve and Izzy find themselves in a crisis of trust after the former (truthfully) claims that Alice pointed a gun at him during a recreational shooting activity the night before the wedding.

Despite all the chaos that she has encouraged over recent months, Izzy cannot fathom her mother acting so recklessly, and begins to question whether she truly knows Steve well enough to trust him implicitly.

As these doubts swim around her head, Izzy decides to let Yannis know about the wedding, paving the way for his dramatic appearance at a meal that evening. Clearly, she still holds some affection for her aloof younger lover.

Thrown by the emergence of his love rival, as well as the blazing row over dinner, Steve takes himself off to his room, where he blasts music through his earphones to drown out the party happening downstairs.

Dom (Tyrese Eaton-Dyce) laments that his family seems to be falling apart, and decides to indulge in some care-free behaviour too with new girlfriend Rome (Eilidh Fisher) – but even their innocent young love leads to mortal peril.

A candle lit in their room accidentally starts a blazing fire at the rustic venue, prompting an evacuation of all guests as it spreads across the building. Everyone except Steve, that is.

The groom misses the commotion over the excessive volume of his earphones and is missing from the assembly point outside. Tellingly, it's Alice who notices his absence, not Izzy.

It's also Alice who runs back into the blaze to retrieve Steve, only for the two of them to become trapped in his room as the fire encroaches around them.

With no other option, they climb out a window onto the roof, yet still have no safe way to decline the multiple storeys. Their dire options are: accept their fate atop the doomed structure, or attempt a great leap of faith onto a neighbouring building.

They choose the latter option, but the show ends on a freeze-frame as they throw themselves into the air, meaning we have no way of knowing for sure whether their death-defying gamble pays off.

The question is, does the Alice and Steve finale set up a second chapter, or is it attended to be ambiguous in the manner of other infamous TV finales, like The Sopranos? We got the answer from writer and creator Sophie Goodhart.

Will Alice and Steve's big cliffhanger be resolved?

Alice and Steve creator Sophie Goodhart has revealed that she has already "decided upon" what happens after that cryptic finale, and would like to bring it to life in a second season.

However, she admits to Radio Times, "it will slightly depend on how popular the show is," with cold, hard numbers typically dictating what survives in the competitive age of streaming.

The show is certainly set up to succeed, with positive reviews, a buzzy launch at Canneseries, and a trailer that amassed several million views online, but it remains to be seen whether that momentum will be reflected in the final results.

Goodhart added: "If it doesn't [prove popular], then yes, it will be an ambiguous ending... Tell everyone to watch it, so that I get some more money!"
