Hyrox athlete Joanna Wietrzyk is giving up her controversial win.
The 22-year-old Australian athlete issued an apology Thursday, September 17, after suffering bowel incontinence during a Hyrox competition in Beijing, China, on September 12, but continuing to race.
“I want to offer my sincere apology to the people of China, my fellow competitors, the spectators and the HYROX organizers for what happened during the race in Beijing,” Wietrzyk wrote on Instagram.

“Looking back, I regret the decision to not have stepped off the track. I recognize that I should have made a different choice. I take responsibility for my decision to continue and am deeply sorry for the discomfort and disruption it caused,” she wrote.
“I know my actions had an impact beyond myself, and I am genuinely sorry to everyone who was affected,” she continued, saying she is learning from the experience and will carry these lessons with her.
The apology marks a change in tone from Wietrzyk’s initial response. She finished first in the 16-to-24 age division with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 23 seconds. Afterward, she reportedly posted a since-deleted selfie from a hospital bed, writing in part, “Go hard or go home … a win is a win.”

Wietrzyk has now decided to “retroactively withdraw” from the race and forfeit the points she earned. She said the experience taught her “that there is more to life than racing and knowing when it is right to step away.”
The incident had already prompted a response from Hyrox after images and videos from the race circulated online and raised hygiene concerns among some viewers.
Without naming Wietrzyk, the organization acknowledged a few days prior that an “unforeseen situation arose” and said ambiguity emerged in how its existing biocontaminant and medical procedures were applied. Hyrox also condemned threats of violence directed at athletes and said anyone found threatening or encouraging harm would be permanently banned from its events.
Wietrzyk, meanwhile, plans to step away for now. “I will be taking some time to recover, reflect and look after myself and my family away from the noise,” she concluded.
