Elgin home explosion rips through residence, leaving 2 hospitalized

Authorities are investigating after an explosion caused significant damage to a suburban Elgin home on Wednesday.

Police said two residents from the home were hospitalized, and a family of five living at the residence were forced to find other accommodations.

Authorities were called to the home in the 500 block of West Chicago Street on Wednesday afternoon for reports of an explosion in the area.

When they arrived two walls of the home had been heavily damaged by an explosion, which had occurred in the basement of the home.

Police say work was being completed in the basement of the home at the time of the explosion, and an inspection ruled that the home was left uninhabitable by the blast.

Five residents in all were evaluated for injuries, and two were taken to area hospitals in unknown condition.

Crews on the scene noted the smell of natural gas and smoke in the basement, but no active fire at the scene. An investigation into the cause of the blast remains ongoing.
