Two local high schools each took home state championships last weekend. Chapel Hill High School took home the North Carolina 7A championship in women’s lacrosse, while Carrboro High won the 4A championship in women’s soccer.

Chapel Hill High won the women’s lacrosse title, its first in school history, by defeating local powerhouse Cardinal Gibbons of Raleigh 12-8 in the championship game in Hickory. Gibbons had won nine of the last 10 state championships and four in a row. Chapel Hill’s Scarlett Gilner – the daughter of head coach David Gilner – scored six goals on her way to earning MVP honors. Scarlett is committed to play collegiately for Elon next season.
In Durham, Carrboro won its title by defeating Hibriten 1-0 in the championship match. The Jaguars outshot the Panthers 21-2 on their way to the win, and Ali Stuntebeck was named MVP after providing the match-winning assist. Carrboro finished the season on a 25-match unbeaten streak after dropping its first match of the year. This is its sixth state championship win and first since 2019.
