NEWTON FALLS — The Newton Falls Board of Education has approved a policy to permit appropriately trained facility dogs to work in the school district under the supervision of a designated staff handler.

Superintendent Andreas Johansson said the purpose of the dogs would be to support students’ emotional well-being, reduce stress and anxiety, encourage positive social interaction and provide a calming presence for students who may benefit from the experience. The dogs also can support school staff members.

Johansson said the dog would be inside the school building. He said there is a golden retriever that would provide support and service to the school.

Johansson also reported on the recent Pathfinder mission to Camp Garfield which was titled “Over the Wall, Together: Leadership Lessons at Camp Garfield.” Thirty Newton Falls students participated in the course at Camp Garfield, located at the Ravenna Arsenal. The event was hosted by members of the Ohio National Guard.

Students worked through several obstacles that required them to move themselves and additional materials over walls, across gaps or by swinging on a rope.

Johansson said teamwork, communication, planning and persistence were part of the event.

“The students planned and solved problems and were able to help each other over the wall.” he said.

Johansson said the learning continued over lunch, when students tried military military MREs (meals ready to eat), and during the closing after-action review, or AAR, the team captains shared what worked, what was challenging and how they would approach the obstacles next time.”

“That final conversation mattered,” Johansson said. “Completing a challenge is one accomplishment. Understanding how your team got there — and what you could improve — is how you become better prepared for the next one. Better today than yesterday.”

Johannson said the school district appreciated Camp Garfield Commander LTC Shaun Robinson for helping make the opportunity possible and thanked the Ohio National Guard recruiting team for guiding students throughout the day.

    n other action, the board:

    • Is reviewing whether to videotape board meetings. Johansson is researching what other school boards are doing to record their meetings and will provide information to the board at a future meeting.

    • Accepted the retirement of Joellen Seidner, maintenance and grounds supervisor, effective June 30.

    • Reported that art teacher Jon Hill and some students will present at the Ohio School Board Association capital conference Nov. 15-17 in Columbus. Hill will have a potter’s wheel, which is used for the clay sculpture program.

    • Approved the governor’s merit scholarship, which establishes procedures for identifying students in the top 5% of their graduating class based on grade-point average at the end of the student’s junior year for scholarship eligibility. The board also approved a tie-breaking criteria.
