The Sooners, the Atlanta Regional’s 2-seed, actually had to come from behind on Saturday. The Citadel struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning. OU tied things up in the 3rd inning, but The Citadel retook the lead 3-1 in the 4th.
Oklahoma went up 4-3 with a 3-run bottom of the 4th and didn’t look back. The Sooners added 4 more runs over the 6th, 7th and 8th innings, cruising to an 8-3 victory.
Cord Rager was excellent on the mound for OU. The Sooner hurler pitcher threw a career-long 6 innings, registering a career-high 8 strikeouts. He allowed 3 runs on 7 hits.
Skip Johnson only needed to use 1 other pitcher. He turned to LJ Mercurius out of the bullpen. Mercurius handled the rest of the game, logging 3 shutout innings allowing just 2 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1.
Due to the weather delay, the Sooners face a quick turnaround. They will play Atlanta Regional host Georgia Tech, the No. 2 national seed, in the winner’s bracket game at 6 p.m. ET in Atlanta.
