Bulls Have Had ‘Early Conversations’ with AJ Dybantsa’s BYU Coach Kevin Young (Report)

Are our Chicago Bulls going to make a bid for AJ Dybantsa, after all?

The Bulls have recently been linked to a potential trade up in the 2026 NBA Draft with the Washington Wizards for the No. 1 pick, and thus semi-consensus selection Dybantsa.

Now, they’re looking into a potential signing of his college coach. Jamal Collier of ESPN reports that Chicago has had “interest and early conversations” with BYU’s Kevin Young.

Elias Schuster, now with Bulls On SI, notes that the 44-year-old Young was a venerated assistant with the Phoenix Suns from 2020-24.

Young has also interviewed for head coach roles with the Milwaukee Bucks, Utah Jazz, Brooklyn Nets, among other NBA squads already.

Young also served as an assistant coach on the Philadelphia 76ers from 2016-20, after three seasons on the club’s G League team, then called the Delaware 87ers.

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Johnnie Bryant.

Bulls Head Coach Search Remains Thorough

Beyond Young, here are the other reported candidates still on the board for our Bulls:

Oklahoma City Thunder assistant coach Dave Bliss Cleveland Cavaliers associate head coach Johnnie Bryant Former New Orleans Pelicans interim head coach James Borrego Minnesota Timberwolves assistant coach Micah Nori Miami Heat associate head coach Chris Quinn Atlanta Hawks assistant coach Ryan Schmidt Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Lamar Skeeter Interim Portland Trail Blazers head coach Tiago Splitter Former Golden State Warriors assistant coach Jerry Stackhouse Bulls assistant coach Wes Unseld Jr.

Chicago had also been in the running for San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney, before Sweeney began finalizing an agreement to replace Jamahl Mosley on the Orlando Magic.

Head coach openings remain on the Bulls, Portland Trail Blazers, and Dallas Mavericks. Beyond the head coach names mentioned for the Chicago gig, more seasoned veteran coaches like Bulls alums Tom Thibodeau and Billy Donovan are still also allegedly on the prowl for their next jobs. Jason Kidd, of course, is a free agent now, too.

BYU head coach Kevin Young argues a call.

Could Kevin Young Become the Bulls’ AJ Dybantsa Whisperer?

Young, a distant relative of Brigham Young, has notched a 49-22 overall record across his two seasons at the helm of BYU, although he has yet to bring the Cougars beyond the Sweet 16.

Dybantsa, meanwhile, is the most talented player Young has handled during his college run.

In 35 healthy games, the consensus All-American small forward averaged 25.5 points on .510/.331/.774 shooting splits, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists a night.

“I think 20 years from now, I’ll be really grateful I got to be part of his story,” Young told Jackson Payne of The Deseret News.

Chicago has lucked into the No. 4 pick in the draft. Generally, Dybantsa is expected to be the first selection — or, at least, not last beyond the Utah Jazz at No. 2. Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Duke power forward Cameron Boozer and North Carolina power forward Caleb Wilson are the other top prospects.

The Bulls could just grab whichever of these players fall to them, rather than surrendering assets during a rebuild for the rights to Dybantsa. But if EVP of basketball operations Bryson Graham considers Dybantsa that impossible to resist, then so be it.
