A suburban man is facing felony charges including attempted murder and hate crime after he admitted to authorities he attacked his roommate with a machete in a fight over money, police said.
Around 12:38 a.m., police responded to a report of a person who was attacked by a man with a machete on the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive in DeKalb.
Authorities found a man with a “severe injury” to his right arm when they arrived at the scene, police said. Officers and fire department officials treated him at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The man who attacked him, identified by police as Joshua Boyer, approached the officers and admitted to attacking the victim — his roommate — with a machete over money, police said. Witnesses told officers that Boyer also made racial comments toward the victim during the attack and threatened to kill him.
Boyner is facing felony charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated domestic battery, hate crime and two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery. He was transported to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office to await a detention hearing, authorities said.
The machete used in the attack was also recovered by police.
“The DeKalb Police Department conducted a thorough investigation into this senseless crime, leading to the swift arrest of this violent offender in a case that unfortunately highlights domestic violence and hate-motivated crime,” DeKalb police said in a statement.
