Camera over Lake Michigan shakes from wind amid beach hazard with ‘dangerous conditions

Strong wind gusts Thursday were creating dangerously high waves at Lake Michigan beaches across Chicago and suburbs, with the National Weather Service issuing a beach hazard for swimmers and even onlookers.

Thursday morning, photos and video showed the choppy conditions at the lakefront near the Adler Planetarium as the NBC 5 camera shook back and forth.

“Waves as high as seven feet through tonight,” NBC 5 Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, warning that both swimmers and onlookers could get swept away. “Avoid piers and breakwalls at all Lake Michigan beaches.”

Sustained winds Thursday were about 15 mph, Roman said, with gusts about 10 mph higher. They were expected to subside by evening, Roman said. Temperatures near the beach would be chilly, too, Roman said, with highs only in the 60s and even colder water temperatures.

Temperatures will reach back into the 80s Friday, dipping down slightly over the weekend and then gradually increasing, with sunny skies expected into next week.
