Nicolas Cage has addressed rumours that he could star in the upcoming True Detective season 5, confirming that talks have taken place between himself and the HBO production.
The mystery drama takes an anthology format, exploring different characters and a macabre new case in each season, with a handful of thematic links and subtle Easter eggs connecting the lot.
One thing that all the entries have in common is big-name stars, with Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali and Jodie Foster being just a few of the actors to feature.
Cage would fit nicely in that group, but the Spider-Noir star has clarified that his involvement is still very much tentative, admitting he has "no idea" how the project is progressing.
"I think they're working on the material, but I haven't heard about it in quite some time," he told Variety. "I'm not signed on to anything; we're just talking."
True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most recent instalment, saw Mexican filmmaker Issa López take the reins from series creator Nic Pizzolatto – and deliver the show's highest ratings to date (via THR).
López is reportedly staying in the top job for season 5, which is a key factor for Cage, who voiced his admiration for the writer-director and said he "would be thrilled" to collaborate with her.
"I've never seen the first season of True Detective, but I've heard great things," the actor added.
Spider-Noir marks Cage's first major TV role, after years spent "adamant" that he wouldn't move to the small screen; that stance began to soften during the COVID-19 pandemic, when his son introduced him to Breaking Bad.
"I waited for something that I thought would be special, and I can tell you that with Spider-Noir, the vision that I had in my imagination manifested in the exact way that I'd hoped," he teased.
