The Pirate Movie, which was released on August 6, 1982, was a loosely based, '80s-style take on Gilbert and Sullivan's classic 1879 musical comedy, The Pirates of Penzance. The film took a playful approach to the material, swapping its traditional Victorian slant for ’80s pop-infused numbers.
In fact, one of those numbers made a mark on the charts. Atkins' and McNichols' duet, "First Love", became a massively popular pop-rock single from the film’s soundtrack.
Sadly, Atkins and McNichol never worked together again after The Pirate Movie. However, fans continued to remember the impact the film had on them in the comments section of the actor's Instagram post.
"I can still sing the songs. I watched this movie so many, many times," penned one admirer.
A second fan wrote, "Man, I have loved Kristy's work since she was on Family. I really miss her. Such an incredible actor. And I actually own the soundtrack of The Pirate Movie on LP."
"I love that movie! Such a wonderful part of my childhood," claimed a third Instagram follower.
"You and Kristy look amazing, by the way. You seem to never age!" exclaimed a fourth fan.
The duo will continue to celebrate the film's impact on pop culture at the Fanboy Expo Knoxville 2026 on July 10 through 11.
