Paris Jackson is drawing a firm line between public life and private grief.
Michael Jackson’s daughter opened up about the pressure she once felt to publicly honor her late father online on birthdays, Father’s Day, and anniversaries of his death. Paris, 28, explained that her perspective has changed in recent years. Now, she says, her relationship with the pop icon is "no one’s business."
"There's definitely a certain element where I felt I had to share everything, and I felt like I owed it to people because I do believe that is the impression I was given of like you owe this to us," she told Jack Osbourne during the Tuesday, May 26, episode of his "Trying Not to Die" podcast. "That has drastically changed in the last few years."
She added, "I don't really feel like any of us owe anyone anything."
Paris went on to explain that she once felt pressure to "mimic" how fans were publicly grieving her late father.
"But for me, like I had a personal relationship, not a parasocial relationship," she told Osbourne. "I can have my own personal relationship, and it—I'm allowed to be private about it, and I'm now like, my relationship is the most beautiful relationship ever."
Paris was just 11 years old when her father died in June 2009. Now, she says she's in a "very beautiful spot" with the "Billie Jean" singer.
"I love that, and it's no one's business, and I don't have to share that with anybody. There's a lot of freedom in that, which is really cool," she added. "But just yeah, I'm not going to express my love in a copycat way, copying someone that didn't know him. Because I did. That was my best friend."
