Sarah J. Maas’ New ‘ACOTAR’ Book Just Shattered a Major Publishing Record—and Dethroned Another Fantasy Bestseller

Sarah J. Maas fans have another reason to celebrate, just one week after the highly anticipated release of A Court of Splintered Harmony.

The sixth installment in Maas’ bestselling A Court of Thorns and Roses series has shattered a major publishing record in the United Kingdom, becoming the fastest-selling adult fantasy novel since accurate records began in 1998.

And in the process, Maas has dethroned another major name in the romantasy world: Fourth Wing author Rebecca Yarros.

According to The Guardian, A Court of Splintered Harmony sold approximately 189,000 copies in the U.K. between its Oct. 27 release and Oct. 31, according to figures from NielsenIQ BookData.

That was enough to surpass the previous adult fantasy record held by Yarros’ Onyx Storm, which sold 155,141 copies during its opening week in January 2025.

And that’s not the only milestone Maas’ latest novel has achieved.

The book also debuted at No. 1 on the U.K.’s overall bestseller chart, marking the third time Maas has claimed the top spot.

According to The Bookseller, the previous time Maas topped the chart was in January 2024 with House of Flame and Shadow, the third book in her Crescent City series, which sold 44,761 copies in its first week.

Publisher Bloomsbury also reported that A Court of Splintered Harmony generated 1.7 million English-language print and ebook sales across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia through preorders and its first day on sale. That figure does not include audiobooks or translated editions.

The record-breaking debut follows an enormous buildup to the Oct. 27 release, which marked Maas’ first return to the ACOTAR series since A Court of Silver Flames arrived in 2021.

Bookstores celebrated the release with midnight events and special gatherings for fans. In the U.K. alone, Waterstones hosted 60 midnight launches and 80 additional early-opening and release-day events.

And the excitement surrounding the new book appears to be generating renewed interest in Maas’ earlier work.

According to The Bookseller, sales of the original A Court of Thorns and Roses jumped 146.3% during the same reporting week, while sales of Maas’ Crescent City trilogy rose 193.3%.

For fans who have already finished A Court of Splintered Harmony, there’s more to look forward to: The next installment, A Court of Forgotten Melody, is scheduled for release in January 2027 and will continue the larger storyline introduced in the newest book.

With another ACOTAR novel on the horizon, Maas’ record-breaking return to Prythian is giving fans plenty to celebrate—and demonstrating just how powerful the romantasy phenomenon has become.
