10 Things I Hate About You actor Andrew Keegan has opened up about the unreliable residual checks he has received from his work in film and TV.
“I think it’s really funny because I’ll get different shows obviously, but I’ll get one cent checks and it costs like 40 cents to send,” the 47-year-old actor explained during a recent episode of The McBride Rewind, adding, “One cent is not worth my time.”
The actor explained that his appearance in the 1999 romcom, which also starred Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon Levitt, is still his biggest money earner.
On TV, he appeared in 7th Heaven from 1997 until 2002 and Party of Five. More recently, he had roles in CSI: New York and 2005's Related. "There are still residuals that come from all those shows, like $10, $20, $50, $80, right?” he said.
Keegan previously told People in 2024 at 90s Con that he is still best recognized for his role as Joey in 10 Things I Hate About You. "There was still something sweet about Joey, that lovable kind of quality that I was recognizing," he told the outlet "We bring ourselves as actors to the roles, there's a little piece of us in the roles. And I think I'm sweet."
Andrew is not the first person to talk about residual checks and how unreliable they are. Jodie Sweetin recently revealed that she “got a one-cent check the other day” for her time in Full House as Stephanie Tanner.
“Sure, in my 20s, there would be money, but not reliable. You don’t know how much it’s going to be or how often they’re going to run the show. So, sometimes you’re like, ‘Oh, cool. That was nice.’ Then sometimes you’re like, ‘All right, well, there’s a nice dinner out,'” she explained on The McBride Rewind podcast.
